The Villain - A hero can’t become a hero unless there’s some dick out to ruin everything. For as long as there’s been love or success, there’s been that one sneaky little creature doing everything they can to undermine and destroy you, often for no reason other than some kind of deep-seated, innate hatred of you. They’ll try to steal your partner. Get you fired. Sometimes they’ll just laugh as the subway doors close right before you were about to get on. It’s what they live for, and it’s all they do.
Why they don’t exist: Unfortunately, life doesn’t work in absolutes. That guy I just described? That’s probably been you half the time. Humans are complicated and irrational and impulsive, and just because we do bad things sometimes, not a single one of us wants to be defined by them. THE LIVES OF OTHERS
this is not the kind of movie i usually see. especially not in the theaters. don’t misunderstand me, though. this is exactly the kind of movie i love. just for some reason, often, someone has to force me to actually sit down and watch. maybe because i know that it will be sad, or unnerving, or color my life in dark tones for awhile. these aren’t things that one usually looks forward to.
and yet. there is something about that experience - that moment when you are profoundly… touched, doesn’t seem enough, does it? i mean, it’s like someone is reaching inside you, cracking your ribcage, bruising your guts, and clenching your heart.
well. it can be more subtle than that. but this one isn’t. this one hurts. but it hurts good.
it isn’t streaming but it’s worth the rent.
^That is exactly how I feel about some movies.
